Zachary Brown and Marla Menninger
Six Bulldog Sailors Named All-Americans

June 6, 2008

NEWPORT, R.I. - Six members of the Bulldog's women's and coed sailing teams were named to the All-American team in recognition of their outstanding performances over the course of the fall and spring 2007-2008 seasons at the All-American Banquet Wednesday night at New York Yacht Club in Newport, R.I.. The Bulldog sailors were ranked as high as first on the women's side and second on the coed side. The women's sailing team finished the ICSA Women's National Championships in third place while the coed team finished the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championships in eighth place.

On the coed sailing time, senior Zachary Brown (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego High School) led the list of Bulldog All-Americans by being named an All-American skipper. This is the fourth time that Brown has been named to an All-American team in his four years of competition as an Eli. Brown was also named an All-American in 2005 and 2007 and an Honorable Mention All-American in 2006. With four All-American honors, Brown has earned more All-American honors than any other male sailor in Yale history. Sophomore captain Thomas Barrows (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/ Antilles School), the ICSA National Single-handed champion, was also named an All-American for his performance in coed competition. Barrows was also named an All-American for his performances in 2007, his freshman campaign.

Two skippers on the women's team were honored as All-Americans for the first time. Juniors Jane Macky (Auckland, New Zealand/ Epsom Girls Grammar School) and captain Kate Hagemann (Naples, Fla. and Marion, Mass./ Naples High School) were named to the women's All-American team. The two Bulldogs helped the team win the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship, arguably one of the toughest regattas in college sailing, as well as contributing to strong performances for the coed team on a number of occasions.

Two crews that competed at the national championships were also named as Crew All-Americans. Senior Abigail Coplin (Delmar, N.Y./ Emma Willard School) was named as an All-American for the second time after sailing in coed competition with Barrows. Sophomore Marla Menninger (Costa Mesa, Calif./ Newport Harbor High School) was named as a Crew All-American for the first time. Menninger primarily competed in women's competition with Macky.

Only Boston College, which won the ICSA/APS Team Race Championships and the ICSA Women's Championships and St. Mary's College of Maryland, which finished third at the ICSA/Gill National Championships, had more All-American sailors than the Bulldogs. Five Bulldogs who have been named All-Americans will return to compete in the fall. In addition to those named All-Americans this year, junior Grace Becton, who was named a Crew All-American in 2007, will compete again for the Bulldogs.
